The engineer has stepped out for a moment. I can’t say when he’ll return. When he leaves his space, he is uneasy. He never wanders very far. The engineer doesn’t like to leave, because of the unpleasant influx of information entering his eyes and ears and brain once he does. But he must go out sometimes, if only for some air. Overheard conversations, music blasting from cars, signage screaming out various intentions. Other people’s voices permeate through him, they muddle his thoughts and merge with them, making it impossible to know which ideas are his own, and which are implanted. Imposter ideas, clichéd phrases from the outside world.

Inventor. Recluse. Insomniac. Monster.

There are three reasons why stepping on a Lego is so painful. The first reason is because of the number of nerve endings we have in the soles of our feet, making them sensitive. Second, Legos have pointy corners. Third, Legos have no give and therefore transfer all of your weight and force back onto you once you’ve stepped on it. Wincing yet?

Jakub Choma (b. 1995 in Košice, Slovakia, lives and works in Prague, CZ) studies painting at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design. Choma uses a variety of materials and digital techniques to create works that often take the form of sculptural collages or complex, layered environments. Solo Exhibitions include Living the Gimmick at VUNU Gallery, Košice (2018), Sleepy eye, wasted time at Via Art Gallery, Prague (2017), and Life for Dummies, at Polansky Gallery, Prague (2017). Inženýr si na chvíli odskočil. Nevím, kdy se vrátí. Když je venku, je nesvůj. Nikdy se nezatoulá příliš daleko. Inženýr nerad odchází, kvůli nepříjemné záplavě informací proudících do jeho očí, uší a mozku. Ale občas musí vyrazit ven, jen tak se provětrat. Útržky cizích rozhovorů, hudba dunící z aut, značky křičící všemožné instrukce. Hlasy jiných lidí jím pronikají, matou jeho myšlenky a navzájem se mísí. Nelze zjistit, které myšlenky jsou jeho a které jsou převzaté. Falešné myšlenky, klišé a fráze okolního světa.

Vynálezce. Samotář. Insomniak. Zrůda.

Existují tři důvody, proč je šlápnutí na lego tak bolestivé. První je počet nervových zakončení na chodidlech, kvůli kterým jsou tak citlivá. Druhý důvod je, že lego má špičaté rohy. A za třetí, lego je tvrdé a klade silný odpor, takže po došlápnutí ucítíte v jednom bodě celou vaši váhu. Už jste sebou škubli?

Jakub Choma (nar. 1995 v Košicích, žije a pracuje v Praze) studuje malbu na VŠUP v Praze. Choma používá množství materiálů a digitálních technik k vytvoření prací, které mají často formu skulpturálních koláží nebo složitých vrstvených prostředí. K jeho samostatným výstavám patří Living the Gimmick v galerii VUNU v Košicích (2018), Sleepy eye, wasted time ve Via Art Gallery v Praze (2017) a Life for Dummies v Polansky Gallery v Praze (2017).
